WIE IK BEN / WHO I AM
Hi! MIJN NAAM IS VENA
Hi! MY NAME IS VENA
As a young girl I knew that I loved cooking much more than helping in the garden. In the garden we grew rice, sweet potatoes, bananas, corn and beans. I grew up in the countryside of Haiti, in a village called Polduc.
In a large family, because in Haiti your grandpa, grandma, uncles and aunts, cousins and nieces are also part of your family. The neighbors are also part of it. That is normal there. We did everything together and we ate from our own harvest. Everyone helped, no matter how young you were. And if we had anything left, we took it to the market to sell. Meat was an exception, we only ate that on Fridays after the market, for example.
Being together and cooking food have always been my two great passions. I love to see how sharing meals connects people and can bring worlds together. Normally I always cook traditional meals intuitively and in my own way.
But in order to share the recipes with you, I measured everything and used the spices that are available in the Netherlands.
I have written down the recipes especially for you as a basis to which you can add your own flavours as much as you like.
In short: recipes from Haiti with a Dutch twist.
Dishes where you can taste the sun on cold days, made my way.
